Sabah Schools
In 1991, a Boyup Brook resident and former prisoner of war held by the Japanese, Ted
McLaughlin, erected a small memorial to honor some of his army friends, and all other
Australians that perished during the tragedy that occurred in Sandakan.  Two hundred
people attended this first memorial service.  This remarkable response created a
movement amongst former POWs, their families and friends to seek recognition for the
victims who died in Borneo, and a greater understanding of the events that took place
in Sandakan.

The Boyup Brook Lions Club and Shire Council added their valued support and
sponsorship, resulting in a new memorial, integrating the original memorial erected in
1991, and now includes the names of all West Australian members of the Sandakan
Force of 2500 that died.

With the development of the Memorial, there
also grew a desire to for contact and friendship
between the youth of Australia and Sabah.

BEG have initiated and continue to nurture ongoing relationships with a number of
schools in Sabah and Lab
uan, the first being a Secondary School in Kota Kinabalu
with historic connections with the Australian Army, the second being a school on
Labu
an Island where the school grounds are on the site of a former Australian Army
Canteen.  These schools warmly welcome contact with memorial groups tours
arranged through BEG, and offer a unique experience for Australians of all ages to
connect with the children of the Host Nation.
BEG are involved in the collection and supply (delivery) of English reading books, computer equipment and
miscellaneous education materials to assist disadvantaged schools in the Sabah and Lab
uan areas, and will
be happy to assist government agencies, community groups, individuals and/or schools in WA to participate
in these activities.

Please
contact us if you would like to participate, or for more information.
