School Scholarships
The first scholarship program was established in 2003 with the assistance of the
Lions Club from the district High School in a small town in Western Australia, called
Boyup Brook.
The Boyup Brook Scholarship was originally named to honor a former local farmer,
Ted McLaughlin, a POW survivor of the notorious Thai Burma Rail. He lost many
mates in Borneo when they were sent as POWs to construct an airfield in Sandakan.
Ted spent many years lobbying for the establishment of a dedicated memorial site in
memory of his mates, and all POWs that gave their lives for our freedom in Borneo.
His fighting spirit won through, and this memorial is now there for all to visit and pay
respects.
The scholarship program has grown since these early days, and is now known as the
PASS program (Partnerships to grow relationships with Sabah Schools) and is
supported by the Commonwealth through the Australia-Malaysia Institute of the
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
PASS offers the opportunity for one (min) lucky high school student (yrs 9 - 12) from
each participating school to enjoy an all expenses paid trip within a group tour during
the ANZAC dedications held each year in Sabah, East Malaysia.
Students can enter through an assignment based competition around the WW2
Borneo war history and the Sandakan Death Marches. Currently there are seven (7)
WA schools participating in the scholarship program, with a vision to expanding the
school group, and scholarship eligibility nationally in the future.
Boyup Brook High School pioneered the Australian Schools Scholarship program, in
partnership with the Lions Club in 2003 and led the way for six years. In the first
year, four students qualified to travel to the SANZAC Seconary School in Kota
Kinabalu to visit their peers.

They undertook research tasks, public presentations before the school community and enjoyed visiting historical
sites that they had been researching, and later meeting the families of Sabahan allies that assisted in the rescue
of Australian POWs during the occupation.
