Founded in Western Australia ...
The Borneo Exhibition Group WA Inc (BEG) was founded in Perth, Western Australia
in 2003 by current Chairperson, Ryan Rowland. A small, not for profit group of
individuals from Australia and Sabah, Malaysia, BEG are responsible for the ongoing
education program to increase awareness of the Sandakan Story. The focus of this
story is central to the events that occurred as a result of the Japanese occupation of
British North Borneo during the second world war, and the taking of Australian
Prisoners of War (POWs). Elements of this program include:
- Resource Information for interested parties;
- Memorial Tours and Services (including ANZAC Day events);
- Pilgrimages for Returned Veterans and their Families
- School Scholarship Tour (since 200X)
Fundraising ...
BEG raises funds by selling merchandise (ie. books, t-shirts, caps, memorial pins),
from donations collected during exhibitions and benevolent members of our
community. Submissions for State and Federal Govt funding are also undertaken,
but not relied upon as core finances due to their infrequency.
Members conduct a variety of fund-raising events (eg. raffles, social dinner nights,
white elephant stalls, etc.) and share the Sandakan story with all interested parties at
any opportunity to ensure the memory remains alive for future generations.
Honouring Veterans ...
These fund raising activities have seen Sabahan residents visit Sydney for the Burwood Sandakan Memorial Service in 2007, where a spontaneous ourpouring of gratitude saw the NSW War Veterans Assn honor them with the presentation of their Association Badge.
|
They have asked BEG to continue to present their Association Badge to those Sabah residents (and
their descendants) who were connected to the underground movement that assisted Australians during
their time of need.
In 2008 three more badges were awarded to Sabah citizens, heroes in their own right, who generously
and courageously assisted our Prisoners of War. This initiative will be maintained until all recorded
families that gave their support receive the War Veterans Badge, in an offer of reconciliation and thanks
in the true spirit of the Australian community and their descendants.
